What is a Dental Implant?

An implant is a titanium screw that is placed in the upper or lower jaw bone. This titanium screw is allowed to heal in the bone and then used to hold a crown or removable device.

Why would a Dental Implant be necessary?

When a tooth is lost, as space is left between or behind remaining teeth. A Dental Implant can be placed and restored with a crown that will fill the space and provide for proper chewing.

Who can have a Dental Implant?

Any healthy adult with enough bone in the area to be restored can have a Dental Implant placed.

Does it hurt?

Most people with have no pain during or after placement of dental implants. A few will have some pain that can be controlled with medication.

What are the advantages of a Dental Implant?

Bone is preserved in areas where implants are placed. In the case where a dental implant is placed between two remaining teeth, the use of an implant prevents the need for a bridge. By preventing the need for a bridge, the teeth on either side of the implant do not have to be cut down. Dental implants can securely hold dentures, or partial dentures, in place. Implants also retain dentures without the need for adhesive.
